The Secrets of Registering on Yahoo's HotJobs Job Search Site

You can greatly increase your exposure to the HotJobs® Job Search site just like you do with Monster®  with your judicious use of focused keywords.  This will get you flagged in more employer searches and hence net you more phone calls from interested employers (or recruiters).  HotJobs® is a bit different than Monster®, so let's cover that right here.

HotJobs® gives you the option of either uploading your current resume, or creating a new resume online.  To get the best exposure, we are going to create a new resume online for the HotJobs® Job Search site.

Note: It is absolutely essential that you first follow directions in "Online Resumes" to effectively build your resume for online posting.  That way, you'll get the greatest keyword exposure for HotJobs®.

Once you create your account with HotJobs®, go to Career Tools and select Post Resume in the Resume Manager.

For our purposes, we will ignore the option to upload your current resume and instead select Create New Resume.  Choose a Template (it really doesn't matter much here) and press Continue.  You will choose through several areas where you simply fill in the blanks or select from a drop-down box.  Not much space for creativity here until you get to the "Description" box after your job title.

There is well over a 2,000 character limit in these boxes.  Here is where you make sure to include every relevant skill-set that you possess.  Keep to the bare facts.  Almost every word you put here should be a searchable term.  You want HotJob's employers to find you and here is your catch-all chance to do it.

Also, since many employers are looking for people who have, or are working for certain companies or organizations, make sure that you list every corporation that you have not only worked for but also have done business with as a client.

Do this with every Job Title you have held. Press 'Add More Experience' to do this.

When you finish with this, press 'Continue'.  With HotJobs you have the ability to add more "Optional Sections".  If you add nothing more to your online resume, be sure to put in a Keyword Competencies Section here.

How to Add a Keyword Competencies Section:

An easy catch-all way to score with the computer search gatekeeper is to add a section in your resume called Keyword Competencies.   Here is where you want to focus on the words most likely to be used by a Human Resources person. The greater number of relevant keywords you can include, the higher relevancy score your resume will be given.

In the in the HotJobs Optional Section, select a Title (Keyword Competencies works).  Then you will have a large area called "Description".  Here is where you upload your keywords.

For example, if you were a Java Programmer, your Keyword Competencies section might look something like this:

"Java, Visual C++, perl, ticl, application development, visual basic, Windows NT/XP, programming, GUI, html, project management, layer 2, BSEE, etc".

The idea here is to put in as many relevant, searchable keywords that describe your potential job title, technical skills, management or organizational skills, relevant software and/or mechanical abilities and expertise. Include anything that might be important to the particular job.

Tip: these fields have keyword capability, so you must use each of these areas to the fullest extent by including as many keywords as are relevant, for example:

Summary

Don’t rush this experience. The online resume-builder will act as both resume and as a screening tool. This will gain you the edge as a screen-in tool rather that a screen-out tool.

Your objective is the same in all these online resume posting sites. Make it keyword-rich and you will definitely get more hits. More hits will generate more calls.
